The Shimmer You Can't Quite Capture

Some pieces have to be seen in person to be truly appreciated — this is one of them. This exquisite Japanese lusterware plate glows with a warm amber-gold iridescent glaze that shifts and shimmers with the light, framed by a soft lavender-grey rim with its own pearlescent sheen. Photographs simply cannot do it justice.

At the center, a delicate hand-painted wildflower bouquet springs from a white vase: vivid orange poppies, soft pink roses, and yellow globe flowers on slender dark stems with feathery green foliage. The contrast of the naturalistic floral spray against the luminous luster ground is quintessentially Art Deco in spirit.

Marked "Japan" on the base with a red floral mark, this plate dates to the post-1921 era when US customs law required the word "Japan" on export pieces. The lusterware technique — derived from Persian and European traditions but perfected by Japanese potters for the export market — was at its peak popularity in the 1920s through 1940s.
